You Could Have Money Coming From The State

More than $11 million dollars has been returned by the state to property owners who had unclaimed property.

The Department of Revenue program uses the agency's tax records to locate owners. Spokesperson Stephanie Marquis says the database matching program has been successful...

"....the goal of the unclaimed property program is to return property that that have been left in checking, savings and other banking accounts and get that back to it's rightful owners. The way we do that is by using technology and some people bring their own claims forward. The program has been incredibly successful...."

Marquis says the agency automatically issues a check if the unclaimed property value is under $2,000. If the property is over $2,000, a set of instructions are issued for taxpayers to claim their property.

She says as of now, $3.6 million dollars still are sitting unclaimed.

If you want to check, go to the state Department of Revenue webpage through the portal Wisconsin.gov and look for the unclaimed propertywebpage
