A former Rhinelander resident has withdrawn a petition for a hearing on whether he remains a sexually violent person.
In 1994, Walter E. Springer was convicted of two counts of second-degree sexual assault. He served 10 years in prison and was released in May, 2004. The state then filed a petition under the state sexual predator law to keep Springer in a secure mental facility for treatment. He has tried several times to be released from care without success.
