Diabetes Affecting Growing Number In Northwoods

November is American Diabetes  Month.  The American Diabetes Association notes nearly 30 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes. Another 86 million Americans have prediabetes and are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.  The  total national cost of diagnosed diabetes in the United States is $245 billion each year.

Conference To Focus On Diabetes

The 11th Annual Northwoods Diabetes Update Conference is set for Tuesday in Minocqua. The conference is designed for healthcare professionals, but the public is invited to attend sessions beginning at 1 p.m. at no charge. The Conference is sponsored by UW-Superior at Reuland's Catering and Conference Center.

November: Diabetes Awareness Month

November was Diabetes Awareness Month. The disease presents itself by not allowing a person to properly digest glucose, causing blood sugar levels to rise. Higher blood sugar levels can cause a number of health-related problems.

Oneida county numbers show one in nine adults over age 20 has either Type I or Type II diabetes. Forty years from now, that number could grow to one in five.
