Lakeland School Board Approves Charter School Agreement

MINOCQUA – The proposed charter school for students with autism at Lakeland Union High School advanced another step Monday with the school board’s approval of the contract between the district and the governing council of the Northern Wisconsin Academy for the Diverse Learner Charter School.

MINOCQUA – A three-year commitment to host two charter schools for those living with autism in 7th-12th grades will cost Lakeland area schools $2.1 million, according to a financial projection prepared by school officials.

MINOCQUA – Local school officials are eying Nicolet College’s Lakeland campus building in Minocqua as the possible site for a charter school for special-needs students, with a focus on those living with Asperger’s Syndrome and others on the autism spectrum.

The timeline for a proposed charter school to serve children living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and others with special needs has been delayed a year, according to a Lakeland Union High School official.


UW-Superior is soon offering a nine-credit summer program designed for students and professionals to be certified in Autism Spectrum Disorder.   ASD's as they are commonly known, affects one in 68 children in the U.S. and includes related disorders to autism such as Asperberger's Syndrome.
