Communities within the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest rely on federal Payment in Lieu of Taxes monies to maintain their infrastructure. The money is paid by the feds because local taxing entities can't collect on federal tax-exempt properties. These payments are stalled in Washington, D.C.

Funding for the Department of Homeland Security runs out at the end of February. Republicans in Congress have moved to stop the funding unless the Obama Administration pulls back plans to stop the deportation of 4 million immigrants not here legally.

The Weston Republican said there are plans to use funds gathered by Homeland Security through fees to keep the agency going even if Congress shuts off funding....

A showdown with President Obama is possible, as the House of Representatives approved the controversial Keystone XL pipeline Friday(1/9/15) by a 266-153 margin. 28 Democrats joined majority Republicans to pass the measure.

 Earlier, the Nebraska Supreme Court allowed the pipeline through that state after a new course away from environmentally sensitive areas was drawn up. The proposed pipeline would first go to Nebraska then south to the Gulf Coast.
