The bidding process is open for contractors who want to build the first section of the Conover-Phelps bike trail.

Great Headwaters Trails President Jeff Currie says the more than three miles of trail should be built by this fall.

“They would have to do whatever clearing has to happen to get the trail ready; they would have to prepare the sub-base, although most of the trail is on railroad grade, so a lot of that sub-base is probably going to be okay.”

A Minocqua cyclist has died after colliding with a commercial vehicle, and its driver has been arrested.

Minocqua Police report 55 year old Robin A. Kuzel died at the scene of the crash just before 3 a.m Thursday on U.S. Highway 51 south in Minocqua.

The driver of the commercial vehicle was 28-year-old Adam B. Lynch from Delavan, Wisconsin who was uninjured.

Lynch is being held at the Oneida County Jail pending charges of homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle, reckless driving causing great bodily harm and inattentive driving.

Cyclists can ride more easily between Tomahawk and Minocqua, now that the Bearskin and Hiawatha trails are connected.

The DNR has finished building a six-mile connector stretch that joins the two major trails together. 

Local business owner Jim Wise has been working to make it happen for more than two decades.  He says while it’s taken a while to secure funding, he has high hopes for the finished trail.

Cyclists can now enjoy over 30 miles of paved bike trails in Vilas County.  

The town of Boulder Junction has finished an expansion of the bike trail system that connects Boulder Junction, Sayner and St. Germaine.  Boulder Junction Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Theresa Smith is hoping the expanded trail will be a boost for tourism.
