Room tax receipts were up ten percent in the Rhinelander area in the first quarter of this year.

Chamber Director Dana DeMet says that’s a significant increase from last year.

“That would indicate a really strong showing over the winter months, he says. "Plus you compare that, the 2014 winter was one of the biggest on record.  So even though we had more snow, colder temperatures in 2014, 2015 actually shaped up to be a better winter in terms of tourism numbers.”

Many Northwoods communities are reporting an uptick in visitors this winter.

Boulder Junction room tax receipts were up eight percent for last year’s fourth quarter, which ended in December.  Rhinelander room tax receipts were up four percent over that time, and Minocqua's went up two percent.

Rhinelander Chamber Director Dana DeMet says more people seemed to be traveling to the Northwoods this year for the snow quality.

Rhinelander is gearing up for home improvement season with the Hodag Home show this weekend.

Rhinelander Chamber Director Dana DeMet says it’s a chance to consult with experts and see a variety of product options.

“Anybody who owns a home here in the Northwoods knows that there’s a very short season in which we can get a lot of our projects done.  So we like to schedule this near the end of the winter season, so that people can get on their calendar for a lot of these projects that are coming up.”

The Oneida County Land and Records Committee will take more time to consider bid proposals for the Heal Creek property near Rhinelander.  The committee wants to give competing parties more time, in case of a compromise.

About 50 people crowded a committee meeting room at the Oneida County Courthouse Tuesday, to weigh in on what to do with the 270-acre Heal Creek property.

The county is selling the land after plans to turn it into a business park stalled.

Rhinelander is set to have its moment in the spotlight on Milwaukee Public Television.

The city has been selected for an episode of the show Around The Corner, hosted by John McGivern.  It’s a weekly half hour segment on public tv that focuses on living and working in different communities around Wisconsin.
