Winter's Intensity Causing Shortage of Road Salt

The state Department of Transportation would like the local counties to cut back on the use of road salt as supplies are running low. Oneida County Highway Commissioner Freeman Bennett says the counties are contracted by the state to keep the roads clear. Wednesday, DOT officials said the long, hard winter has taken a toll on salt supplies. Bennett says they will be adjusting how much salt is applied on certain roads....

DOT Gets Public Input On U.S. 51 In Woodruff, AV

A town chairman says they will sit down as a board soon and discuss the state's construction options for U.S.51.

Tuesday evening, the Department of Transportation held a public information session on a proposed road upgrade between 3rd Street and state Highway 70 in the towns of Woodruff and Arbor Vitae. The state presented a series of options.. Minocqua had its portion redone this year. Hazelhurst in Oneida county also is in the construction cue.

Woodruff Chairman Michael Timmons says the board will meet soon...

DOT Schedules U.S. 51 Meeting for Woodruff-AV

The Department of Transportation is holding a public meeting later this month to look at construction of U.S. 51 in Woodruff and Arbor Vitae.

While work in Minocqua happened last year, Woodruff and Arbor Vitae officials have questioned the D.O.T. plans.

DOT spokesperson Kristin McHugh says they want to talk about the current and future needs of the federal route...

DOT Frozen Road Law Changed For Northern Haulers

Though temperatures have been cold, it's still several days before Wisconsin's Frozen Road Law will kick in. That word from the D.O.T.... but a new way of looking at hat roads are covered under the law has been announced.

The D.O.T.'s Mike Sproul says they've worked with the trucking industry to establish new boundaries for four of the state’s five frost zones....

Eagle River, Town of Lincoln, DOT Battle Over Street Lights

City officials in Eagle River and the Vilas county town of Lincoln are upset with the Department of Transportation about lighting along highways. The state says it's a matter of keeping past agreements and safety.

In Eagle River, in city areas officials think are "over lit" they have turned off 27 lights. A couple of lights were turned back on after people complained. But local governments would like to save more money by turning off some of the lights along the state-maintained roadways.

The Ref has arrived in the Northwoods...and we're not talking about a football game.


The Transportable High-End Rider Education Facility...THE REF...is operated by the state DOT's Motorcycle Safety Program.


With the Fall Ride in Tomahawk expecting to attract 40,000 people this weekend, many on motorcycles, DOT officials bring the motorcycle simulator and trainer to give people a perspective on motorcycles and safety.


Spokesperson Peggy Drinsinger says the idea is to cut down on accidents with more education...

15 Miles In Vilas County To Be Repaved In 2014

The public is invited to a meeting called by the Department of Transportation concerning the repaving of 15 miles of road in Vilas county next year.


DOT Project Manager Dan Erva outlines what the DOT would like to do...



"....in Vilas county from county highway "M" to county highway "W". The DOT is planning on resurfacing the highway to address the deteriorating pavement. Construction is scheduled for the summer of 2014..."



The stretch from county "M" to "W" is about 15 miles.

WisDOT Exempts State Haulers From New Rules

Wisconsin will create its own set of Hours of Service rules for truckers hauling loads within the state. The federal government set new rules for haulers which began this week. Drivers must stop for half-an-hour after 8 hours on the road. By creating its own rules, Wisconsin will suspend the federal rules for three years.
