More bicycles are on the road this summer and a Wisconsin Bike Federation spokesperson says motorists and bicyclists need to know the rules of the road.

Richard Hablewitz says according to Wisconsin law, a bicycle is a vehicle and has the same rights afforded to any other vehicle using the roadway....

"....cars have to by law give bicyclists at least three feet by law. A bicyclist can use the full travel lane if they wish to. The law does say the bicycle has to ride as far right in the lane as practical...."


Fatter-tired bikes are popping up on winter recreational trails and a DNR spokesperson says to keep in mind legalities and safety.

The bikes have ultra-wide tires for traction. Brigit Brown, state trails coordinator for the DNR, says this has led to concern over potential collisions between snowmobilers and the slower bikes. Brown says on the bikes are legal on state-owned linear trails, but can't operate on snowmobile trails not owned by the state...
