State Council On Homelessness Welcomes First Leader

MADISON, Wis. - Wisconsin's new Interagency Council on Homelessness takes another step toward getting started this week,  when its first-ever director takes the reins.

Michael Luckey had been a policy advisor for Assembly Majority Leader Jim Steineke of Kaukauna, and helped guide a number of bills addressing homelessness through the Legislature. One of those bills, Assembly Bill 234, created the Interagency Council on Homelessness.


A major fundraiser to help Northwoods homeless people is coming this Saturday.

The Northwoods Alliance For Temporary Housing is hosting their annual Anniversary Gala and Dance at the Hodag Banquet Center. NATH operates Frederick Place homeless shelter in Rhinelander. Shelter Executive Director Tammy Modic says the public has given them the opportunity to be here...

" is our seventh anniversary of operation of Frederick Place. NATH opened the doors of Frederick Place on Jan. 31, 2011. We're coming up on the seven-year anniversary and ready to celebrate...."

A bowl of hot soup sounds good on a cold day, and an opportunity for that warmth will help feed and house others in 2018.

The annual Lakeland Soup For Shelter benefit is set for January 13 at Holy Family Catholic Church on Highway "J" in Woodruff.

Rhinelander Community Foundation

The Rhinelander Community Foundation recently awarded a $ 2,000 grant to the Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing, the lead organization for the Frederick Place homeless shelter.

Community Foundation Coordinator Sue Makris says the money came in part from an anonymous donor... 

"....we were fortunate to have a donor come forward wanting to contribute money for NATH for the operation of Frederick Place. The Board of Directors for the Community Foundation chose to match it out of some early granting that their doing...."

Northwoods Alliance For Temporary Housing

A key fundraiser for the homeless shelter in Rhinelander happens Saturday.

The 8th annual Soup For Shelter features a variety of soups made by area restaurants, door prizes, raffles and more. Soup For Shelter is being held at Nativity of Our Lord North, Kohlbeck Hall. Admission is by free-will offering.

There's a fundraiser this weekend that benefits two non-profits based in Rhinelander that often help each other.

The annual Harvest Hoedown is Saturday from noon until 6 p.m. at Woodpecker Bar & Grill west of Rhinelander on county highway "K".

The harvest-themed event benefits the Rhinelander Area Food Pantry and NATH/Frederick Place homeless shelter. There will be a pig roast, live music, line dancing,horse-drawn wagon rides, country store, pumpkin patches, face painting, and more, all geared toward a family event.

You might see a big green and gold bus around the Northwoods and the U.P. and inside are members of the Green Bay Packers doing their annual Tailgate tour.

Tickets are going fast for a Friday evening event in Rhinelander to benefit Frederick House homeless shelter. Frederick House Director Tammy Modic says the stops include raising money for one local non-profit, and in Rhinelander, it's Frederick House.


A Nicolet College class has partnered with the Rhinelander-based Frederick Place Homeless Shelter in an effort to collect donations needed on a daily basis at the shelter.

Tarah Rappley is a Business student and to complete her degree needs to take on a project for the Service Learning Class. The students decided helping out Frederick Place was their project...

"....what we decided to do was set up donation bins at Trig's here in Rhinelander and also the Dollar Tree in Rhinelander to collect donations, even monetary donations...."

Tuesday(1/31/2017) was the sixth anniversary of Rhinelander's homeless shelter Frederick Place. This Saturday is a key fundraiser to help keep them operating .

The Fifth Anniversary Benefit is set for the Quality Inn on West Kemp Street in Rhinelander beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The 6th annual "Soup For Shelter" provides the public a chance to enjoy soup and bread from Northwoods restaurants, but it also is a key fundraiser to maintain Frederick Place says Executive Director Tammy Modic...

"'s a free will offering where we will have close to 10 different businesses that are donating some delicious soups. People can try as many as they like for that free will offering...."

Community Support Keeps Homeless Shelter Open

It’s the holiday season and a time for giving.  That spirit of giving has a big impact year-round on Frederick Place, the temporary housing shelter in Rhinelander that serves 5 counties in the Northwoods. 

One day in November, the doorbell rang at Frederick Place. It was a 5 year-old boy, who’d come with his money to donate his $30 of birthday money to help the homeless. Heartwarming and unexpected gifts like these are starting to show up more often, says Executive Director Tammy Modic.

November is National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Month. The Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing and Frederick Place, the homeless shelter in Rhinelander, are gearing up for campaigns to fulfill their mission of providing shelter for the homeless.

Groups to Conduct Winter Homeless Count

Volunteers will be scouring four counties this Wednesday night to tally the area’s homeless population. 

The point-in-time count is conducted by a coalition of groups called Northern Wisconsin Initiative to Stop Homelessness, including Oneida County UW Extension and Forward Service Corporation.  It covers Forest, Langlade, Oneida and Vilas Counties. 

Coordinator Lori Hallas explains the count is an important tool to measure the homeless population.

The annual "Soup For Shelter" supports the Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing and the shelter, Frederick Place, in Rhinelander. The shelter is used by persons from Oneida, Vilas, Lincoln, Forest and Langlade counties.

The Northern Wisconsin Initiative To Stop Homelessness Continuum of Care will conduct their bi-annual count of the homeless on July 31.

Lori Hallas from Forward Service Corporation says the "Point In Time" count finds volunteers and staff going out in the region to get an idea of how many people are without shelter....

"....right now we're looking at the cities of Rhinelander, Minocqua, Eagle River, Crandon and Antigo...."
