It’s the holiday season and a time for giving. That spirit of giving has a big impact year-round on Frederick Place, the temporary housing shelter in Rhinelander that serves 5 counties in the Northwoods.
One day in November, the doorbell rang at Frederick Place. It was a 5 year-old boy, who’d come with his money to donate his $30 of birthday money to help the homeless. Heartwarming and unexpected gifts like these are starting to show up more often, says Executive Director Tammy Modic.
November is National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Month. The Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing and Frederick Place, the homeless shelter in Rhinelander, are gearing up for campaigns to fulfill their mission of providing shelter for the homeless.

Volunteers will be scouring four counties this Wednesday night to tally the area’s homeless population.
The point-in-time count is conducted by a coalition of groups called Northern Wisconsin Initiative to Stop Homelessness, including Oneida County UW Extension and Forward Service Corporation. It covers Forest, Langlade, Oneida and Vilas Counties.
Coordinator Lori Hallas explains the count is an important tool to measure the homeless population.
A key fundraiser for the Northwoods homeless shelter happens this Saturday.
The annual "Soup For Shelter" supports the Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing and the shelter, Frederick Place, in Rhinelander. The shelter is used by persons from Oneida, Vilas, Lincoln, Forest and Langlade counties.
