Rhinelander High School’s mock trial team finished eighth in the nation this weekend.  46 teams competed in the national tournament held in Madison.

Faculty coach Kathy Vick-Martini says it’s the best they’ve done at nationals in a decade.  And that’s with seven of the nine members new on the team this year.

Senior members and co-captains Amber Sheth and Lydia O’Brien both earned recognition as “outstanding performers” in attorney roles.  Three underclassmen from the Rhinelander team also earned “outstanding performer” recognition in witness roles.

Rhinelander High School is once again the state champion in mock trial.  The team competed before the state Supreme Court justices in Madison.

It’s the 17th time Rhinelander has won the state championship.  But with one loss in the semifinals, Coach Kathy Vick-Martini says the final round against Shorewood High School was tense.

“So we knew going into the finals that Shorewood had defeated the team that had defeated us.  And we were definitely the underdog.”

Rhinelander High School’s Mock Trial team won the regional championships at Wisconsin Rapids last weekend.  It now heads to the state competition.

Faculty coach Kathy Vick-Martini says Rhinelander could face stiff competition, with teams from around the state getting better and better every year.

“You never go into the state tournament with high hopes, you can be cautiously optimistic.  With this team, there are so many new people to the team this year – but they surprised me at regionals.”
