Wisconsin Tribes Net Robert Wood Johnson Grant

  The Lac du Flambeau and Menomonee Indian tribes were two of eight winners across the country awarded a $25,000 Culture of Health grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Both tribes were chosen for their dedication to implement change to achieve a healthy community. Program Officer Abbey Cofsky says building a culture of health means providing equal opportunity.

LDF Schools To See Retirees Volunteer In Schools

At their regular July business meeting, the Lac du Flambeau Board of Education endorsed district superintendent Dr. Larry Ouimette’s recommendation that the Lac du Flambeau Public School District adopt a Senior Tax Exchange Program (STEP). 


STEP began in Colorado and was first implemented in Wisconsin at Kaukauna in 1995. 


In board discussions, Ouimette noted that a STEP programs are in place “in a number of school districts in Wisconsin” including the Waupun Area School  District and the School District of Prescott, among others.


A slow but steady move forward is how a spokesperson for the Lac du Flambeau tribe describes the effort to provide a regional high-speed internet service.

The tribe, Vilas County Economic Development and the town of Minocqua and others are partners in the effort.
