DNR Plans to Change Rest Lake Dam Flows

Lake Manitowish is part of the Manitowish Chain of Lakes, which many property owners worry would be disrupted by a change at Rest Lake Dam.

DNR managers are proposing a new operating plan for the Rest Lake dam in Manitowish Waters.  But property owners want more time to give input. 

The draft order calls for reducing the fall water drawdown to 1 foot, compared to the current three-and-a-half foot drawdown.

DNR Northern Region Director John Gozdzialski explains taking out less water in the fall means there will be more water in the winter and early spring.

Christmas Bird Count May See Fewer Seed-Eaters

Manitowish Waters will hold its annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count Saturday. 

Groups throughout the Northwoods and across North America help track long term trends in winter bird populations. 

It’s the twenty first year of the Manitowish Waters count.  Coordinator John Bates says over that time he’s seen significant change in bird populations.  This year he’s expecting low numbers, especially of seed-eating birds that often travel here from Canada.

Name Of Vilas County Traffic Victim Released

Vilas  county authorities have released the name of the man who died in a crash early Thursday morning in the town of Manitowish Waters.


20 year old Ezekiel Jonas of Manitowish Waters was killed in the single-vehicle wreck.


The crash happened near the intersection of Alder Lkae Road and Powell Road. When emergency responders arrived, they found a pickup truck had struck a tree. officials used a metal-cutting tool to pull the truck's driver from the vehicle. The driver was alone in the vehicle.

Dropping Temperatures Mean Long Nights for Cranberry Growers

Cranberry bogs are often flooded or put under a sprinkler to keep frost away.

Cool temperatures Sunday night had cranberry growers in northern Wisconsin on frost alert. 

On a chilly night, cranberry bogs can run many degrees colder than the average air temperature on the ground.  Bob Winter runs Vilas Cranberry Company in Manitowish Waters.  He says the mercury would have dipped below freezing in the bogs, if he hadn't turned on water sprinklers to help keep the plants warm.
