County Rejects Offers To Buy WPS Building

Three proposals to purchase the former WPS building near the Oneida county courthouse by a Rhinelander businessman were rejected by the county board Tuesday, but it might not be the end of bargaining. That rejection also had a bearing on the location of two county departments.

Mike Boyd's offers included Oneida county paying to use some of the office space he would construct. One of the options was to locate the county UW- Extension and possibly Land and Water Conservation departments in the new building.

The Oneida County Board heard the first run through of a potential comprehensive change how the county pays most of its employees.

Consultant Charles Carlson outlined a plan using private market factors...among other considerations... in determining a median wage scale. During this week's Board of Supervisor's meeting, Oneida County Economic Development Corporation Director Roger Luce said critics say the incubator's compete with private sector rentals. He disputes that...

The Oneida County Board has tabled a move to allow boathouses  at the water's edge.

A two-hour debate ensued, centering around the long-time flashpoint of property rights versus the water rights of all residents.

A public hearing in July asked whether to allow boathouses at the water's edge for storage and whether those structures could have flat roofs.

Lake protection groups have said the area near a lakeshore is crucial to maintaining a healthy lake, with runoff a problem.

The Oneida county board has begun what could be some tough budget meetings.

Administration committee chair David Hintz says the county is looking at a $1.1 million deficit out of a $50 million routine budget.

Some department heads were called in to talk about capital projects including more road building, fixing problems in county buildings and aging equipment that needs updating among others. Buildings and Grounds Director LuAnn Brunette said the projects for that department could be in the neighborhood of $500,000 alone if the board went ahead with them.
