The School District of Rhinelander is looking for input on a new strategic plan.

It will help set goals and priorities for the next few years.

Superintendent Kelli Jacobi is inviting the public to a series of meetings Wednesday and Thursday…to offer feedback and suggestions.

The Rhinelander School District's Assistant Superintendent has sued the school district saying he was not compensated properly following a 2007 settlement agreement. The lawsuit was filed last Thursday in Oneida County Circuit Court.  David Wall is saying the district did not abide by the terms of the agreement by not giving him annual wage and benefits increases of 3.8 percent. The 2007 agreement with administrative members included performance increases, though the floor was set at 3.8 percent. Wall was given a new, three year contract in 2012.

Open enrollment begins this week.  Wisconsin families have the option of enrolling their kids in any public school district, even if they live outside its boundaries.

For some districts open enrollment brings more revenue, while for others it draws resources out of the area.

Northland Pines right now is losing about 70 students, but has a net positive gain with around 85 coming in.   District Administrator Mike Richie says they’ve been on the positive end of the equation since 2010, and he keeps a close eye on the numbers.

In Rhinelander, Central Intermediate School is scheduled to be open Tuesday after Monday's unexpected closing.  School District officials say part of the school’s electrical system failed, affecting the heat in the building.

Staff became aware of the problem around 6 am and called WPS.

But the announcement software designed to alert parents of school closings also malfunctioned.  Rhinelander Schools Superintendent Kelli Jacobi says parents were notified late.

A former Rhinelander high school English teacher has been sentenced for theft and drugs.

As part of a plea bargain to include several charges, 35 year old Joshua Juergens was given four years probation, and 31 additional days in jail. Juergens was arrested in September after a disturbance at his residence. Later a search warrant was served by police who found a computer belonging to Rhinelander high school and a marijuana grow operation. District Attorney Michael Schiek said four charges were dismissed after Juergens entered guilty pleas to theft and drug charges...

By early next year, staff at Rhinelander schools could be getting some of their health care from a clinic in the school.

The Aspirus Rhinelander Clinic and the school district are discussing how to implement the program. Regional Director Rob Fabich says the school district is looking at ways to cut health care costs and thought having the services on campus would be one way to do that...

The Rhinelander School District is looking for a new Community Education Coordinator.  Kim Swisher announced her resignation today.  She’s headed to a brand new communications position with the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.

“It was just too exciting to pass up.  I have greatly enjoyed my work with the school district and have learned a great deal serving our students and our community.  And this was just something too exciting and too much of an opportunity to walk away from.”

Rhinelander school district officials have developed a web page so residents concerned about school funding can keep up to date.  Rural school districts are feeling a financial squeeze as many districts have fewer students and are getting less financial aid, but still required to follow mandates.

The legislature's budget-writing group, the Joint Finance Committee, is looking at school funding at this time.
