The lakes and rivers of the Northwoods can pose danger to children who don’t know how to swim. The Rhinelander YMCA is seeking to rectify that. Thanks to a Swim Access Grant from the National YMCA, the Rhinelander Y will be offering free swimming lessons to children who quality. Acquatics Director Melissa Nieman says the goal is to reach "kids that are on free and reduced lunch, our YMCA scholarship program as well, those are that we’re really looking for, ages 5 to 18 years old with no or limited swim ability.”  Up to 75 scholarships are available.

With summer weather arriving in the Northwoods, health officials are reminding the community to practice healthy swim habits.

This week is designated Recreational Water Illness and Injury Prevention Week.

The Oneida County Health Department says using life jackets and knowing CPR can prevent drowning and other injuries in the water.

Melissa Nieman, Aquatics Director at the YMCA of the Northwoods, says she hears about lots of young kids going to the lake without parental supervision.  But she encourages parents to keep a close eye on their kids in the water.
