Sharp pencils have produced a surplus from an initial budget deficit in Three Lakes.

Town chair Stella Westfall said in the early work they were about $143,000 dollars over budget. But she says staff and department heads found a way to turn that around...

 

"...they just did a great job and made recommendations to decrease our expenses. The department heads really tried to be efficient...bottom line is instead of this $143,000 deficit, we ended up with a $34,000 surplus...."

A motorcycle driver was killed Friday afternoon on Military Road in Three Lakes.

Chief Scott Lea reports the crash happened about 2:30 near Hay Meadow Road. The unidentified 52 year old man was pronounced dead at the scene by the county coroner.

The intitial investigation found the motorcyclist failed to negotiate a curve.

The victim's name will be released when relatives are notified.

The crash remains under investigation by Three Lakes Police and the Oneida County Coroner's office.

Three Lakes plans to pay its fire chief starting next year - at least a small amount.  

An outgoing volunteer fire chief went before the town board this week to request that future fire chiefs get a small stipend to cover travel and other incidental costs.  Town Chair Stella Westfall says the budget committee still has to decide how much that stipend will be.

Next weekend, June 29-30, a festival in Three Lakes highlights the heritages that make up the Northwoods.

The Northwoods Heritage Fest in Three Lakes Saturday and Sunday features a full festival dedicated  to German, Italian, Polish, Irish and Wisconsin, USA,  and Three Lakes heritages.
Skip Brunswick from the Three Lakes Chamber says there will be much to see.

The Oneida County Land and Water Conservation Department, Lumberjack RC&D and UW-Extension are inviting people with a need to talk about the Northwoods to an open microphone this Thursday evening in Three Lakes.

County Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator Michele Sadauskas says the new event is called "Northwoods Expressions."

Whether to allow ATV's in Three Lakes to use busy county road "A" will return to a county committee after they decided they needed to find out more information.

The town board in Three Lakes approved the use of town roads. Other lesser-traveled Oneida county roads are open to ATV use, but Highway Commissioner Freeman Bennett says he has concerns about allowing ATV's on "A". The committee has given Bennett the authority to regulate whether county roads should be open to ATV's, but he says the county "A" corridor between Sugar Camp and Three Lakes is different..

The Three Lakes town board has unanimously approved a proposal to expand the local library. The board of trustees has been planning the renovation for more than three years. 

The plan for renovating and expanding the Edward U. Demmer Memorial Library includes a 4000 square foot addition.  Board President Vicki Ruehling says the extra space is badly needed, and points to a 20 percent increase in the number of library visits last year.
