Vilas D.A. Employee to Stay On

 

 The limited term employee working in the Vilas County District Attorney’s office will be staying on the job for another six months while the office implements a paperless system.

The Vilas County board of supervisors on Tuesday approved a request by District Attorney Al Moustakis to extend the limited term employee through March, 2014.

Goodbye Little Rock Lake Curtain

A landmark study on acid rain came to an end today.  Researchers took down a barrier that’s divided Little Rock Lake in two for nearly thirty years.  Dismantling the curtain was no easy task.

Decades after scientists proved the effects of acid rain on northern lakes, it was time to take down the Little Rock barrier that made the study possible.  Fifteen researchers, students and divers were on hand for the challenge:  how to dismantle a 250-foot curtain…made of heavy black plastic, and partially submerged under years of sediment.

15 Miles In Vilas County To Be Repaved In 2014

The public is invited to a meeting called by the Department of Transportation concerning the repaving of 15 miles of road in Vilas county next year.


DOT Project Manager Dan Erva outlines what the DOT would like to do...



"....in Vilas county from county highway "M" to county highway "W". The DOT is planning on resurfacing the highway to address the deteriorating pavement. Construction is scheduled for the summer of 2014..."



The stretch from county "M" to "W" is about 15 miles.

Vilas Co. Joins Oneida With Dead Bird

The Vilas County Public Health Department reports a dead crow found in Vilas County on Tuesday and has tested positive for West Nile virus. This is the first bird that tested positive for West Nile virus in Vilas County since surveillance for the mosquito-transmitted virus began May 1. A dead crow was also found this week in Oneida county.

Flying In From Hollywood

Vilas Theatre hosted a special screening of Airplane.

Eagle River got a dose of Hollywood last week.  State tourism officials hosted a screening of the movie Airplane.  Jim Abrahams was in attendance.

The Vilas Theater gave out a hundred and fifty tickets for the Airplane screening, and turned others away.  State tourism officials also highlighted a promotional video shot in Vilas County, and hinted that another was in the works.  As Wisconsin Tourism Secretary Stephanie Klett explains, it features Jim Abrahams and two other producers of Airplane.

Dropping Temperatures Mean Long Nights for Cranberry Growers

Cranberry bogs are often flooded or put under a sprinkler to keep frost away.

Cool temperatures Sunday night had cranberry growers in northern Wisconsin on frost alert. 

On a chilly night, cranberry bogs can run many degrees colder than the average air temperature on the ground.  Bob Winter runs Vilas Cranberry Company in Manitowish Waters.  He says the mercury would have dipped below freezing in the bogs, if he hadn't turned on water sprinklers to help keep the plants warm.

Vilas Co. Board Nixes LDF ATV Trail

The Vilas County board of supervisors has turned back another attempt to establish an ATV route on a county highway.


Earlier this year, supervisors rejected a proposal for an ATV route in the town of Phelps.


Tuesday night, supervisors said no to an All-Terrain Vehicle ordinance that would have permitted an ATV route, on county highway D in Lac du Flambeau.
