Fire Damages Rhinelander Home

Damage was limited from a structure fire Monday afternoon in Rhinelander.

Firefighters were called about 4:00 p.m. to the 200 block of Maple Street.

Fire Chief Terry Williams says they were able to limit the damage...

"....when we arrived there was fire in the wall, we had a crew inside and crew outside...opened the wall from both sides. There were some embers in there...very little smoke water damage..."

Price County Authorities Identify Traffic Victim

Price county authorities have released the name of a person killed Thursday in a one vehicle traffic crash.

75 year old Everett Crist of Phillips died in the accident on East Solberg Lake Road in the town of Worcester. The car hit a power pole and overturned. Crist was pronounced dead at the scene.

15 Miles In Vilas County To Be Repaved In 2014

The public is invited to a meeting called by the Department of Transportation concerning the repaving of 15 miles of road in Vilas county next year.

DOT Project Manager Dan Erva outlines what the DOT would like to do...

" Vilas county from county highway "M" to county highway "W". The DOT is planning on resurfacing the highway to address the deteriorating pavement. Construction is scheduled for the summer of 2014..."

The stretch from county "M" to "W" is about 15 miles.

Springer Withdraws Request For Treatment Release


A former Rhinelander resident has withdrawn a petition for a hearing on whether he remains a sexually violent person.

In 1994, Walter E. Springer was convicted of two counts of second-degree sexual assault. He served 10 years in prison and was released in May, 2004. The state then filed a petition under the state sexual predator law to keep Springer in a secure mental facility for treatment. He has tried several times to be released from care without success.

Realtors Want Exception to Oneida Co. Sign Ordinance

The Northwoods Realtors Association would like Oneida county to loosen it's rules about signs on roadways. But that proposal is opposed by one government body, and met with skepticism by another.

The county controls signage through ordinance. Small signs pointing to a spot are allowed, but the realtors would like to display larger off-premis directional arrows to properties for sale.

Incident In Forest County Leads To Two Teen Arrests

  Two teenagers were arrested by Forest county authorites after an alleged stabbing incident.

The Sheriff's department report being called Saturday night after a report of an altercation. They contacted 17 year old Bradley McGeshick who deputies say had superficial wounds. He was arrested for disorderly conduct, substantial battery, obstructing law enforcement and probation violation.

Paddleboarders Need Lifejackets-DNR

The growing popularity of paddleboards on Wisconsin's waters has prompted a DNR warden to remind users that a lifejacket is required.

Conservation warden Todd Schaller outlines the lifejacket requirement..

"....they are growing in popularity, it's a great way to enjoy Wisconsin's waterways. But they are considered a boat, so they require a lifejacket to be on the paddleboard and we would encourage them to wear the lifejacket..."

Polar Sentenced For Man's Death

A 47 year old Crandon man has been sentenced to prison for the New Years Day 2012 death of a pedestrian in Forest county.

Norbert Polar was sentenced Friday by Judge Leon Stenz to seven years in prison and eight additional years of extended supervision for homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle.

41 year old Klynt Decorah was walking on Highway 55 near Mole Lake when he was struck and killed by a vehicle. Polar's car was later found in a ditch. Polar was found guilty of five of six counts during a jury trial May 10.

Deputies Staff Country Music Festival Grounds

A contingent of Oneida county sheriff's deputies are working the Hodag Countryfest grounds in Pine Lake this weekend, as tens of thousands of music fans are here for the annual festival.

Sheriff Grady Hartman says they put as many deputies as possible at the site...

"....we patrol the grounds and we patrol the roads leading into the grounds and the perimeter. We're looking to try and solve problems before they happen and be proactive with our patrols..."

Oneida Co. Comprehensive Plan Sent To Board

A sometimes bitter debate has ended as Oneida County's Comprehensive Planning Oversight Committee has sent their work to the full county board to consider.

The state requires local units of government to put together a land use plan.
