News Director

Ken has been  News Director at WXPR since 2000. This is his second stint with the station, having served as Operations Manager and Morning Edition host from 1987-1995. A 1976 graduate of UW-Stevens Point, he has served in a variety of roles in radio including sports play-by-play, sales, Program Director along with an extensive background in news. Ken has also worked as an assignment editor in a TV newsroom and as a city reporter for a local newspaper. A passion of his is the WXPR Saturday morning polka show which he brought back to the air in 1989. He loves many styles of music, especially those that DON'T include a guitar.

A native of Antigo, he likes to birdwatch, fish and read and hopes to someday publish a book he's had in his computer for 12 years.

The 34th Annual CranberryFest is set for the weekend of October 5 and 6 at the Vilas County Fairgrounds in Eagle River.

Massachusetts used to be the top cranberry producing state. About two decades ago Wisconsin over took Massachusetts and now the Badger state is poised for another record crop.

Beef-A-Rama Comes To Minocqua For 49th Year

More than 15 thousand people will gather in Minocqua next weekend to pay tribute to.... the beef roast.


For the 49th time, Minocqua merchants say thank you to customers and travelers with "Beef-A-Rama". Initially held in the spring to lure those going fishing, the event moved to the fall and features beef, a parade, crafts, music and demonstrations.

Six Chippewa Bands Ask Pres. Obama To Intervene On Mine

Wisconsin's six Ojibwe tribes have jointly written a letter to President Obama asking him to intervene to halt construction of the Penokee mine in Iron and Ashland counties.


Late last month, the tribes sent President Obama a letter requesting the Department of the Interior prepare litigation to protect the wetlands, fisheries, waters and wildlife from mining.

Vilas County Search Underway After Clothing Found In Woods

A ground search in Vilas county has begun after a hunter turned up a jacket and a shoe in the town of Plum Lake.


Sheriff Joe Fath reports the hunter said he saw a child's or smaller adult jacket and a shoe along a snowmobile trail. Fath reports the hunter thought it was strange that the clothing was there. It appears to have been there for awhile.


A ground search in the area is looking for other evidence.

The Wisconsin Lottery reports a ticket sold at Dietz Service on county "W" in Manitowish Waters matched all six winning number in the Thursday, September 19 SuperCash! drawing to claim the $350,000 dollar prize.


Winners have 180 days to claim the prize.


SuperCash! is a daily lotto game played only in Wisconsin. The odds of winning SuperCash!'s top prize are about 1 in 1.6 million.

The Vilas County Fall Accomodation Tour and Workshop is being held next month and business owners will see whether their business plan works, or not.


The annual tour is co-sponsored by the Vilas County Tourism and Publicity Department, Vilas County Chamber and the Northwoods Chapter of the Hotel and Lodging Association.


It's hosted this year by the Manitowish Waters Chamber.

First Larger Walleye Fingerlings Released in Lake Minocqua

Larger fingerlings into Lake Minocqua

The first stocking resulting from the state initiative to raise larger walleyes for Northwoods lakes began Thursday morning in Woodruff and Minocqua.

DNR crews were cornering then netting out the 8 inch fish from a rearing pond at the Art Oehmcke Hatchery in Woodruff.

It's part of an $10 million dollar state-funded effort to expand production at DNR state fish hatcheries. Production should increase five times to over 500,000 fingerlings by 2016. Sports groups have expressed concerns about the walleye population.

Motorcycle Crash Victim Dies

One of the two motorcyclists injured in a crash last weekend north of Tomahawk has died.


The Oneida County Sheriff's Department reports 50-year-old Benjamin J. Guite, Sr. of Merrill died Wednesday at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. The second motorcyclist, 49 year old Lynette A. Haman of Elkhorn, Wisconsin was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield. Her condition was not released.
