Another Season Upon Us: Tax Season

Oneida County Treasurer  Kris Osterman says the first installment of your real estate taxes needs to be paid by the end of January, but remember where you need to pay them. State law allows the tax bill to be paid in two installments, with the final payment due by the end of July.

Osterman says the first payment goes to your local government...

"....they have to remember they have to pay their property taxes to their municipal treasurers. So the local treasurer collects this time of year..."

Osterman says many people try to pay for their property taxes with a credit card to the county this time of the year. It's the wrong place to pay for those taxes.

"....you can pay it in full, or you can pay the first installment, but the first installment must be paid to your town treasurer by January 31...."

Taxes paid late gather an interest charge.

She says many people try to pay their taxes with a credit card  to Oneida county, but can't until a later date. The local clerk, be it city or town, gets the first payment. The second payment,  if you choose to pay in installments, goes to the county treasurer's office.
