Boating Season Opens And Also Invasive Threats

commons.wikimedia.org

The private fleet of boats hits the water this weekend with the opening of Wisconsin's inland fishing season. Also out will be volunteers who will help boaters make sure they don't spread aquatic invasive species to otherwise clean waters.

Michele Sadauskas is Oneida County Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator. She says they work at boat landings to talk to boaters about not spreading the problem...

:....we're out talking to boaters trying to be pro-active. Once invasive species enter a lake it's virtually impossible to eradicate them...."

Sadauskas says volunteers can learn this week how they can help...

".....we are offering a Clean Boats-Clean Waters workshop at Hodag Park at the landing. We'll be training volunteers how to strike up conversations with boater and recreationists to help stop the spread of invasive species...."

Sadauskas says they're offering a Clean Boats-Clean Waters workshop May 5 at 5:00 p.m. at the Hodag Park boat landing. They will be training volunteers how to strike up conversations with boaters and recreationists to help stop the spread of invasive species.

Speakers will walk volunteers through real watercraft inspections. Another discussion will give identification tips for aquatic plant species and a DNR warden will talk about Aquatic Invasives from a law enforcement perspective. Saudauskas says she would appreciate it if you call her office at 715-369-7835 to register.
