Cake Auction Helps Send Three Lakes Students to Washington, D.C.

Donna Welhofer

A fundraiser in Three Lakes can be sweet for both you and some eighth-graders.

Three Lakes eighth-grade teacher Donna Welhofer says their 9th annual cake auction is next Thursday, Dec. 7, at the Three Lakes school.

She says it helps kids find out about our nation's government...

".....we have our 8th graders go to Washington, D.C. in the spring. We take all of our kids not just the ones whose parents can afford the trip. We fundraise all the money we need for the trip. That first year we were doing it we were looking for new ideas. Heidi Lindner, who was a cook here for several years came up with the idea of a cake auction..."

Welhofer says it has been successful, the first year raising about $2,500 which surprised them with the positive result. She says they've expanded from desserts to items like holiday gift baskets. She says the public has also donated things like hand-made furniture and more. She says staff, parents and community members help prepare the food to be auctioned.

Col. Robert St. Louis is the auctioneer. It's begins at 5:30 with viewing time for items up for auction and 6 p.m. for bidding. Bidders need to register by 6 p.m. Contact Donna Welhofer at Three Lakes schools for more information, 715-546-3321 ext.222.
