Election Update: Late Decisions Announced

en.wikipedia.org

There were some races and questions that were left open late on election day as results came in late.

In Langlade county, incumbent treasurer Tammy Wilhelm was reelected over Doug Nonnemacher. Wilhelm had 5711 votes, Nonnemacher 4095.

Lake Tomahawk had a referendum question asking whether the U.S. Constitution should be amended saying only people have constitutional rights, not corporations or other entities, and money is not speech and can be regulated. That passed by a margin of 506 to 52. Wisconsin voters give Republicans their largest majorities in decades in the state Legislature, as the G-O-P continues the nearly complete control it's had in state government since 2011. Stevens Point Democrat Julie Lassa lost the Senate seat she held since 2003, with 48-percent of the vote against Republican Patrick Testin. Senate Democratic Minority Leader Jennifer Shilling of La Crosse and former Senate Republican Dan Kapanke each had 49-percent with three-percent of the vote still to be counted. If Shilling loses, the G-O-P will have a 20-13 majority in the Upper House, its largest since 1967. In the Assembly, Trempealeau Democrat Chris Danou lost, Wausau Democrat Mandy Wright failed to win back a seat she lost two years ago, and one other race was still too close to call during the night -- and the G-O-P could have as many as 65 of the 99 seats in the lower house, the Republicans' largest since 1967.

Republicans led the way Tuesday in Wisconsin with surprising strength as the nation elected a new President, kept it's Republican U.S. Senator, kept the Northwoods member of Congress, and swept state Senate and Assembly seats. Several other local questions were decided.

Polls leading up to Tuesday's vote showed Democrat Russ Feingold had the lead in the U.S. Senate race, but incumbent Republican Ron Johnson defeated  Feingold by about a 52-46 margin. For the 7th District Congressional seat, incumbent Republican Sean Duffy defeated challenger Mary Hoeft by a 62-38 margin.

For the 12th State Senate seat, voters returned incumbent Republican tom Tiffany of Hazelhurst to Madison for a second four year term.

Tiffany thanked the voters.... "we made the case through the course of this campaign that we had put in place important reforms for the state of Wisconsin and then talk about the future here. It resonated with voters. I can't thank them enough for returning me to the State Senate...."

In the 34th district Assembly race, incumbent Republican Rob Swearingen defeated challenger Matthew Michelsen 63 percent to 37 percent. Swearingen also thanked the voters....

"You know, this campaign, reallyone of the longer ones, started in May and June, I would like to think we did our job. We canvassed areas, knocked on doors. I talke to a a lot of great people here in the Northwoods..."

Swearingen said he thinks the legislature will pick up where they left off on issues like rural broadband and school funding.

In the 35th Assembly race, incumbent Republican Mary Czaja defeated challenger Renea Frederick by a 66 to 34 margin..

Incumbent Republican Jeff Mursau of Crivitz was unopposed for the 36th state assembly seat.

Locally, voters in the Elcho School District approved two referendum questions, one  renovating the school buildings, and another to exceed the state revenue limits for operational money.

Three Lakes voters advised the town board that they would favor tax dollars for work at the Demmer library, but narrowly said no to using tax dollars to redo a proposed town office building.

In Iron county's District Attorney race, Republican Matthew Tingstad defeated Democrat Anthong Stella by 13 votes out of more than 3400 ballots.

In Oneida county, Tracy Hartman won the County Clerk's race, defeating a write in challenge by Kerri Ison by a wide margin.

In Vilas county, two towns, Lincoln and Conover approved combining the clerk-treasurer positions. In Hiles, in Forest county, the town defeated a question to appoint a clerk/ treasurer but instead approved an elected one.

A race for county treasurer in Langlade county and a referendum question from Lake Tomahawk were not available early Wednesday morning.
