"Heavy Metal" Tour Hits Nicolet College

Ken Krall WXPR

More than 500 Northwoods eighth-graders arrived at Nicolet College in Rhinelander Wednesday to see what heavy metal is all about. This wasn't a tour of musical acts, but rather exposure to manufacturing jobs. The annual "Heavy Metal Tour" brings the early teens to talk to educators about getting schooled in manufacturing and seeing first hand what's being built , says Nicolet Director of Enrollment Erica Warning...

"...a lot of 8th graders are considering what their career paths might be. We want to make sure we're aware of all the opportunities in the manufacturing industry and companies in our area...."

Warning says the Northwoods has a number of options for people wanting to get into manufacturing careers....

" we have a large breadth of manufacturing industries in our area that cover things from paper processing all the way to laser manufacturing, different things like that...."

Cole Kupfer of Elcho

Cole Kupfer of Elcho visited two area manufacturers and says he has been weighing his career options...

"....(manufacturing jobs) would be the second thing I'd pursue in this field. I'd like to be in the medical field. I'd like to be an ultrasound technician...."

Participating businesses include Advanced Barrier Extrusions ABX, Northstar Steel, Ponsse, Superior Diesel, Printpack, Lakeshore Systems all of Rhinelander; Daigle Brothers and Northland Stainless, both of Tomahawk; and Nimsgern Steel, Minocqua.
