Judge Orders Tran To Trial For Step-Son's Death

Oneida County Sheriff's Department

A Rhinelander-area woman charged with second-degree reckless homicide will have her case continue in Oneida County Circuit Court.

28 year old Ellen Tran was arrested after the death of a step-child in April. Friday, Tran's attorney Amy Sholz again asked that charges be dismissed for lack of evidence.

Judge Patrick O'Melia denied the motion and found there was enough evidence to bind Tran over for trial.

A call for help April 14 to Tran's residence found the child having trouble breathing. The boy died at a Marshfield hospital. Officials testified earlier the cause of death was blunt force trauma. Tran allegedly told investigators the child slipped in the shower.

Judge O'Melia set August 14 as a day for Tran to enter a plea. Tran remains free on $50,000 bond. The judge allowed Tran limited travel under bail conditions.
