"Lily's House" Shelter Nearing Completion

Many have probably driven past the current domestic violence shelter without giving it a second glance. It looks like a regular single-family home.

Shellie Holmes, the Executive  Director of Tri-County Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, explains the move to a more visible and comforting location.

“There’s been quite an evolution I guess you’d say in our movement, where it used to be people that hung out in secret, and they put people away in places that were maybe sub-standard,” Holmes said.

She said it’s important for the community to know more about the shelter as well as support the victims. Holmes said shelter residents do better knowing the community is standing behind them. The facility will be protected by a state-of-the art security system.

Holmes, as well as the Tri-County Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, welcomes the community to tour the new facility before it opens. Groups or individuals can also “adopt” a room by furnishing or decorating it.

The shelter is named after longtime volunteer Lily Kongslein  who spent 25 years volunteering and advocating for victims and their families.

Tours can be scheduled by calling 715-362-6841.
