Lincoln County Sheriff Jeff Jaeger has released the name of the deputy involved in the shooting incident Monday February 27.
He is identified as Deputy Sam Steckbauer who has been employed by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office since 2010. Per standard procedure, Steckbauer has been placed on administrative leave pending completion of the investigation by the state.
A 40-year-old man fatally injured was identified as Shawn Igers of Wausau. According to sheriff's officials, the deputy responded to a report of a vehicle in a ditch on County Trunk Double "F" west of Merrill in the town of Corning. The sheriff's department says Igers, who was driving the car, allegedly fired at the officer.
The officer returned fire, killing Igers Sheriff's department officials say no new information will be available until the state investigation is complete.
