Many Northwoods Snowmo Trails Remain Closed

commons.wikimedia.org

Snowmobile trails in Vilas county remain open but travel on them is not advised, other counties remain closed.

Oneida county trails remain closed according to a message from the Oneida County Forestry Department.

In Forest county, Forestry/Parks Administrator David Ziolkowski says those trails also are closed. He says the wetlands remain unfrozen...

"....at maximum we may have three inches of snow here in Forest county. Due to the wet conditions and the fact the wetlands aren't frozen, we have not been able to get our equipment out to lay down a trail base or do any grooming at this point in time. So officially, our trails will remain closed through this weekend...."

Ziolkowski says they will contact the area snowmobile clubs on Monday to discuss the situation.

The weekend between Christmas and New Years often is one of the busiest times of the year for Northwoods tourism businesses. While Mother Nature provided cold temperatures, snow and frozen conditions early in November, a weekend of fog, temperatures in the 40's and rain nearly wiped out the snow cover and postponing the opening of snowmobile trails in portions of the Northwoods.

A message from Oneida county indicates trails are closed.
