Mel Flannery Recounts April Honor Flight

Jill Zagar

89-Year-old Mel Flannery of Crandon is a WWII army veteran.

Mel particpated in the the Honor Flight in April, an effort to fly veterans to their Washington, D.C. war monuments.

Flannery boarded a very early flight out of Mosinee. He was accompanied by his doctor, Vera Bocoun of the Marshfield Clinic, Wausau Center. The plane had  97 people aboard including veterans and care providers. Flannery says he was surprised by the reception he received from others...

“The best part is everybody wanted to shake my hand. And all these other guys in other wars, they even wanted to. I get on the airplane and here they are, all from a different fight. I was in the second world war. And that seemed to mean a lot more to them. But I think it was because there is only such a few left.”

Following tours of various memorials, the plane returned back to Mosinee. All of Flannery’s family and friends gathered at the airport to welcome him home.

If you know a veteran that would like to participate in an Honor Flight tour, visithonorflight.org for information on the upcoming flights.
