Minocqua Signs Bearskin Trail Lease

Wisconsin DNR

Bicyclists who want to do a loop around Minocqua Lake using a short segment of the Bearskin State Recreation Trail won’t have to dip in their wallet for a trail pass fee after town board action Tuesday. Supervisors on a 4-1 vote approved a lease agreement with the state Department of Natural Resources covering a third of a mile of trail from downtown Minocqua to Dr. Pink Drive. In the past, bikers had to pay the trail fee or risk a citation.

The lease requires the town to maintain the deck and railings of the former railroad trestle and pay the DNR $95 a year. The Bearskin Trail is also a snowmobile route.

Supervisor Billy Fried based his “no” vote on that maintenance issue:

“Aren’t we using it like from May 1st to Oct. 1st, or something? It makes no sense to me that we would be responsible for the snowmobile wear and tear."
