The DNR and Department of Transportation unveiled a new eagle license plate design last week that replaced the Badger design, making it a novelty item. Beginning today drivers will be able choose between the new plate and the 20 year old timber wolf design.
According to the DNR the bald eagle was removed from the endangered species list in 2007, and Species Management Chief Owen Boyle says the new design will highlight that recovery. He says funds raised by the sale of the specialty plates goes towards the DNR’s effort to continue to restore native plants and animals.
“…That’s what’s traditionally thought of as the non-game program. So wildlife, plants and animals, that make up essentially what is the natural world here in Wisconsin and those species that aren’t huntable or fishable.”
Sales of the Badger plate ended Aug. 17, but drivers with the plate can still display it on their car. Applications for the eagle plate are being accepted. For more information visit dnr.wi.gov
