Northland Pines Moving Ahead With Drug Testing Policy

en.wikipedia.org

Random drug testing for Northland Pines high school students is being prepared by the district policy committee for implementation with the 2016-17 school year for all 9-12 grade levels, with expansion to include grades 7-12 in the 2017-18 school year.

“We will send a letter to all parents giving them the option of allowing the school to randomly test their kids for up to 10 substances,” district administrator Mike Richie said. “We will enclose a stamped, self addressed letter for them to respond.”

Originally, the district wanted to test only those students participating in school activities or who drove to school but switched to include all students with parent permission. Permission, if given, would follow the student as long as they are enrolled, but could be rescinded by parents at any time. In cases where parents have joint custody, both would have to give permission. The district would notify parents of test results, both positive and negative, and recommend appropriate counseling is positive.

A policy on random alcohol testing with a breathalyzer for events such as dances, prom, or other school activities is also being developed since the district will fund a police liaison officer for the next three years.
