Rhinelander High School was one of the top three winning teams at this year’s Solar Olympics at UW-Oshkosh. The Solar Olympics is sponsored by WPS Community Foundation and is an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and skills about solar power by designing, constructing and demonstrating a solar cooker, water heater and a solar powered model car. Most schools involved in the competition are part of the state wide SolarWise program. WPS Spokesperson Leah Vanzile says the competitive based program is paying off…

“..It’s exciting to know that Rhinelander placed with a gold medal for the solar sculpture category and Lakeland Union High School placed with a gold medal for the solar jeopardy top individual category. Of the top 3 teams winning the most medals this year, Rhinelander did place in the top three winning 4 medals overall.”

Vanzile says the SolarWise program is sponsored by WPS Community Foundation.   55 schools in northeastern Wisconsin are taking part in the program, and offers curriculum focused on solar and renewable energy to students.

Valders placed first with 8 medals and Green Bay Southwest placed second with 5 medals.
