Pick 'em For Yourself And The Rhinelander Area Food Pantry

en.wikipedia.org

If you want to  get your hands dirty next week you can get some food for yourself and benefit local food pantries.

The UW-Madison Agricultural Research Station east of Rhinelander, along with the Wisconsin Potato & Vegetable Growers Association and area food pantries host a 'A Night On The Farm'.

Rhinelander Area Food Pantry Executive Director Guy Hanson says the community is welcome to stop out on September 16 and get their hands dirty...

"...people from the community to come out to the Ag Research Farm out in Starks and pick some potatoes, take a few home and the rest go to the pantry. Last year we picked almost seven tons of potatoes. The AG Research Station was kind enough to store them for us and then we come and get them as we need them at the pantry...."

Guy Hansen says the research station stores the picked potatoes at the station under optimum conditions until the food pantry needs them. Hansen says everyone who picks can take a few potatoes home, so bring your own container.

The Research Station is 6.5 miles east of Rhinelander on county highway "C".

Picking is from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. September 16.

Hansen says come dressed to get dirty, as the potatoes are dug up and on top of the ground for picking. Non-perishable food items are also being accepted for donation.
