An American Red Cross volunteer from Woodruff has first-hand knowledge of help that is necessary and the steps you should take beforehand to protect yourself in the event of a house fire.
John Grosman grew up in Sugar Camp. In the 1950's, his family experienced a blaze that destroyed their home. No one was injured, but the house was total loss. He says there weren't the volunteer fire departments of today. He says the family mistakenly tried to fight the fire instead of trying to get out of structure...

"....one of the things they talk to you about in considering home fire safety, obviously you need some insurance, but you should also think about, have some design, as a mom or a dad, is a fire escape plan. What would you do?..."
He says the Red Cross mission at that point is to give the people some quick help....

".....ultimately, folks who experience a home fire disaster, or disasters of various forms, water disasters or folks impacted by severe weather, or so on, you get disconnected from all your connectivities in life...."
Grosman says the the Red Cross is in need of volunteers from this region willing to help out.
