Rhinelander Gets National Boating Award

WXPR

The city of Rhinelander has received an award from a national boating organization for its new Boyce Drive boat landing. City officials along with DNR representatives presented the award to Mayor Dick Johns.

The boat landing is on the former DNR Ranger Station property where the Pelican and Wisconsin Rivers meet.

The DNR's Ann Loechler says the national States Organization of Boating Access, or SOBA, thought Rhinelander's project was outstanding for a small boat landing. She says there were many engineering challenges...

"....there were a lot of engineering skills that went into it. They had some challenges as to where they could put the boat launch because of the steep hill, because of the sanitary sewer, so there were a lot of engineering challenges, including a rock which we had to deal with....."

Jim Bollman from MSA Engineering in Rhinelander also was applauded for his work.

DNR Deputy Secretary Kurt Thiede says the national award highlights a grant process and local efforts to help people get into the outdoors...

"....that's what today was celebrating, great design, great partnership to advance the ability of citizens and visitors of this state to get to the water...."

Thiede also toured the Oneida County Enterprise ATV Trail south of Rhinelander with county officials and area ATV clubs.
