Roads, Sidewalk Art Featured At Recent ER Meeting

Issues with roads and sidewalks occupied discussion at a Eagle River city council meeting (7/12) that included a decision on Pleasure Island Road, final payment of the Division Street project, a new process for some road segments, and allowing a special sidewalk art project.

An estimate of $471,000 for Pleasure Island Road serving the Northland Pines schools was extreme and the council will continue fixing a short 450 foot segment as in the past. Alderman Paul Hennes preferred the school, who is on city sewer and water, ask to be annexed. The council approved final payment of $103,000 for the Division Street project which came in almost $90,000 under budget and approved $24,000 for a “scrub seal” application of portions of three roads. Scrub seal applies a special oil to the road which will extend road life but does not level it out.

Sidewalk art will take a new twist in August when special stencils visible only when it rains will be applied to several sidewalks downtown. Known as “Rainworks” the project is part of Arts on Tap sponsored by The Warehouse Center for the Arts, Walter E. Olson Memorial Library, and Eagle River Revitalization program. Wisconsin's poet laureate Kim Bleaser will be featured in the stencils.
