Sec. Stepp Named Venison Queen In Tomahawk

WDNR

She wasn't the first Venison Queen, but she's glad she was asked.

A Tomahawk Chamber of Commerce tradition...the 51st annual Venison Feed is always held the Friday before the opening of the gun deer season in Wisconsin. More than a thousand hungry hunters attend to eat venison burgers and enjoy the hunt.

Last year, Department of Tourism Secretary Stephanie Klett was crowned the first Venison Queen.

This year, DNR Secretary Cathy Stepp gets the honor...

"....it is my very first pageant, coronation, I'm thankful I didn't have to participate in the swimsuit competition although I had one ready in blaze orange but thankfully I didn't have to share that sight with anyone. Being the 51st Venison Feed Queen is indeed a big honor....."

Stepp says she's optimistic hunters will see more deer...

"...we've got some pretty good numbers that we see coming in. We have real strong population numbers in central Wisconsin, south central Wisconsin, northeast Wisconsin. We're still working on getting those harvest numbers to be show up higher in the far northern counties, but we're getting there..."

The gun deer hunt runs through November 27.
