The state Natural Resources Board has approved the purchase of 120 acres from the Johnson Heritage Trust Company of Rhinelander for about a quarter-million dollars for the Upper Wolf River Fishery Area east of Elcho in Langlade county.

The Upper Wolf River in Langlade County has been classified as an Outstanding Resource Water.

The DNR's Doug Haag outlines the parcel...

"....the parcel is about 1,200 feet of town road frontage on Whitetail Lane, providing improved access on the Wolf River. This is a mixture of upland and wetland with a large amount of ten year old aspen. I should be ideal grouse and woodcock hunting, deer hunting...."

Haag says 75 percent of the cost to buy the land comes from a federal and state sources...

".....we do have 75 percent cost-share funding for this transaction with the funds from the(federal) Sport Fish Restoration Fund. That is funding we get from the excise tax on fishing and hunting equipment...."

25 percent of the funding comes from the state Knowles-Nelson Stewardship fund.

The board unanimously passed the purchase.
