Tiffany Introduces Local Option Sales Tax Bill

Wisconsin.gov

State Senator Tom Tiffany of Hazelhurst has authored a bill that would allow local governments to ask for a local option sales tax to be used exclusively for transportation.

The bill was co-authored in the Assembly by Represenative Dean Knudson.

Tiffany says the tax would be similar to what counties already have the authority to do....

"....it's similar to the half-percent(sales tax) that many counties in Wisconsin implemented a couple of decades ago. Additional revenue for services they provide in the county. This would be strictly for transportation purposes, specifically for maintenance and repair of roads...."

The tax would need to be approved by referendum before it could be implemented. He says it is similar to the Premier Area Resort Tax the city of Rhinelander voters approved via advisory referendum in April. Tiffany says it's clear that more revenue is needed for road maintenance. He says he doesn't know when the bill will be heard in the legislature...
