Two Kohl Recipients Teach At St. Germain Elementary

The Herb Kohl Educational Foundation earlier this month honored four Northland Pines School District students and teachers who picked up money for achievement.

The Kohl grants are competitive across Wisconsin, so it was unique that two teachers from St. Germain Elementary and the Montessori Learning Center within St. Germain Elementary each picked up awards.

Donna Hejtmanek is a Title 1 teacher and Megan Hoffman teaches first through third grade at Montessori. The awards are presented for showing a strong love of learning in students, ability to move others and leadership in and out of the classroom. Hoffman and Hejtmanek were nominated by Principal Tony Duffek.

Hoffman says the students and parents were supportive of her award...

".....The students are are aware of it and celebrated with us in the beginning when I heard the news that I had received it, and as a school it makes you stand out among others...."

Each teacher will get a $3,000 fellowship and the school also gets a $3,000 matching grant. Hejtmanek says the money for the school will be used next year to help start a new program...

"....it's called Academic Parent -Teacher teams and with that the parents are going to be responsible for doing some home activities to help the students reach their goals...."

Hejtmanek says it was an honor to be considered for the Kohl awards at the regional level, much less get the fellowship on a statewide level.

Northland Pines students Samantha Hytry and Jennah Ludwig both of Eagle River also received Kohl Foundation Scholarships of $5,000 each.
