U.S. 2 Reopens, State Agencies Meeting With Iron, Ashland, Sawyer Officials

Good news for travelers to northwestern Wisconsin. The DOT says a main artery that had been detoured after heavy rains and flooding damaged the highway last week is reopening. Here's the DOT's Diana Maas...

"....as of this morning(7/21) U.S. 2 is fully opened to all traffic including semi-trucks in Ashland and Iron counties were excited to have that corridor open. We know it is main highway and highly used roadway. Wisconsin 13 in Ashland county is still closed between Mellen and Wisconsin 112...."

Maas says use WIS 77, US 51, US 2 as alternative route. In Iron county.. Wisconsin 122 is closed north of U.S. 2 to the Michigan state line. Work is expected to begin next week. No official detour has been posted. Wisconsin 169 is closed betweeu Wisconsin 13 and U.S. 2. Wisconsin 77 and U.S. 51 and U.S. 2 are alternate routes. In Bayfield county.. US 63 is closed at Twentymile Creek near Grand View. Traffic is detoured. Work to repair damages on US 63 began last Monday .. The DOT anticipates this project will be complete and open to traffic mid-August.

Also, officials from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, DNR other state agencies will be in Hurley, Ashland and Hayward Friday to provide information and assistance to local governments impacted by last week’s flooding. Maas says the goal is to establish better communication...

"....state agency representatives will be in Hurley, Ashland and Hayward on Friday to meet with local governments about storm related damage. We're going to have several state agency representatives in one location. We're calling it a 'one-stop-shop' where municipal officers can get information about how the state is responding to the flooding that happened last week..."

Along with officials from the DNR and Wisconsin Emergency Management, WisDOT staff will be available to assist local government officials in assessing damage to roadways and to help identify funding for needed repairs.The meetings include at the Iron County Courthouse in Hurley at 8:30 a.m. and in Ashland at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center at 11:30 a.m.
