After reviewing five bids for a new 330 foot self-supporting Vilas County sheriff's department transmission tower, the county communication committee approved the low bid of Daniels Construction of Madison for $422,422.

The new tower will be located near Rummels Road in the town of Conover and is designed to have hold up to three co-collators. It will replace communication equipment currently on the WERL-WRJO radio tower in Land O' Lakes costing $24,000 a year in rent plus $8,000 for a dedicated telephone line connecting the Weber tower in the town of Washington to Land O' Lakes.

The Wisconsin DNR has approved removing two acres of land from the county forest for the tower site. With the service building and other equipment installed, the total tower cost is projected to be $660,000.
