Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Northwestern Wisconsin has begun a community-based youth mentoring program in the Northwoods.
Kinship of the North had previously performed the community-based mentoring but that organization has dissolved, having been active in the Northwoods since 1980.
Big Brothers-Big Sisters spokesperson Mary Kinnunen says that organization had provided school-based youth mentoring but now will do both. She says Kinship asked Big Brothers-Big Sisters to take over their community-based mentoring programs.
The Color Dash is a Minnesota-based organization whose mission is to raise local money for local causes.
The Color Dash is coming to Rhinelander for a 5K run in August to benefit Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Northwestern Wisconsin. Big Brothers and Big Sisters provides professionally-supported one-to-one mentoring services, serving 450 childen in nine northern counties including Oneida, Vilas, and Price.

Two events coming to the Northwoods next month are fundraisers to help youth in the region grow to their potential.
Mary Kinnunen is a spokesperson for Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Northwestern Wisconsin, serving Oneida, Vilas, Price and Taylor counties. The group is considered a national leader in mentoring youth. Through the group, adults meet with young people about an hour a week either in public community setting or at the student's school. They hope to set higher goals for the matches and have young people avoid risky behaviors.
